Insured Losses from the Palisades and Eaton Fires

The California Department of Insurance publishes what insurers have paid for the January 2025 Palisades and Eaton Fires. The per-fire, per-category breakdown exists only inside a state PDF, so we reproduce it here in full, exactly as the department published it. These are the state’s figures, not ours, and they describe insurance claims across thousands of policyholders. They do not describe any individual’s claim.

What this is. These figures come from the California Department of Insurance, an arm of state government, and cover insurance claims filed with insurers after the fires. They are a matter of public record. They are not litigation figures, not a compensation program, and not a statement about what any person has received or could receive.

The full figures, as of March 2026

The department reports three separate categories. We keep them separate, exactly as the source does. The numbers below match the state record to the dollar.

A note on the department’s two figures

The department also publishes a headline summary on its Wildfire Claims Tracker: 41,800 claims filed and $23.7 billion paid to date across the January 2025 wildfires, updated March 3, 2026. The detailed table above, broken into three categories, carries different totals. We do not reconcile them, because the department has not: they are two separate presentations of the same event, and we publish each as the state published it. The honest reading is that both are official figures measuring the same disaster in different ways, and neither should be treated as a single bottom line.

Insurance is not the whole picture

These are insurance payments. They sit alongside two other, separate tracks. One is Southern California Edison’s direct compensation program for the Eaton Fire, whose figures we keep on the key dates and numbers page. The other is the litigation itself, whose case numbers, judges, and schedule are on that same page. These tracks overlap: a single household can have an insurance claim, a program claim, and be part of the litigation at the same time. That is why no one of these numbers is the answer to what a person has recovered, and why the figures should never be added together.

What you can do next

If your home or business was affected, the fire’s own record has more detail and a way to reach a firm representing people in that case: see the Eaton Fire record or the Palisades Fire record. If you are rebuilding, the free California Wildfire Recovery Handbook covers insurance, documentation, and government aid in depth.
