Eaton Fire: Southern California Edison turns to cross-claims against public agencies
A year into the Eaton Fire litigation, the utility named in many of the lawsuits has filed claims of its own against Los Angeles County and other agencies. A look at the public record.
The Eaton Fire generated one of the largest waves of wildfire litigation in recent California history. Beginning in January 2025, residents of Altadena and the surrounding communities filed lawsuits alleging that Southern California Edison equipment sparked the fire, and over the following year public agencies including Los Angeles County, the city of Pasadena, and the Pasadena Unified School District filed their own suits against the utility.
The public record now shows the dispute moving in more than one direction. In January 2026, Southern California Edison filed cross-claims against Los Angeles County and other agencies over the fire's causes and response, a step widely reported by local and national outlets. Separately, the U.S. Department of Justice has filed lawsuits against the utility tied to the Eaton and Fairview fires.
